1864: Was Hayes involved in the burning of the Shenandoah Valley? At the beginning of the US Civil war, Hayes was appointed as a major in the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry and rose to the rank of major general. (1) Several Ohio units were involved in the burning of the valley. (2)

1876: Elected 19th President of the US and honors his pledge to serve only one term. (1)

1893 Jan 17: Dies at his home Spiegel Grove in Fremont, OH. (1)
